Guide Tone Jazz Improvisation

Bert Ligon's Connecting Chords With Linear Harmony is an excellent resource for jazz improvisers looking to improve their lines using guide tones. The entire book focuses on three basic melodic patterns that can be found in some shape or form in many of the solos of the jazz greats.

Check out an example of how this works here from the UNC Jazz Studies website: Basic Outlines or Fundamental Patterns to Connect Chords in Jazz Improvisation
